The Gelatin Manufacturers Association of Asia Pacific: Promoting Safety, Nutrition, and Sustainability

Founded in September 1996, the Gelatin Manufacturers Association of Asia Pacific (GMAP) is one of the four regional Gelatin Associations. It functions as an independent, non-trading, and non-profit organization. GMAP represents 14 leading gelatin and collagen peptide manufacturers in eight Asian Pacific countries, including Australia, New Zealand, India, Japan, China, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand.

GMAP’s Mission: Advancing Natural, Safe, and Sustainable Products

GMAP’s core mission is to communicate the benefits of gelatin and collagen peptides, highlighting their safety, nutritional value, health benefits, and contributions to sustainability. This commitment is backed by rigorous adherence to the highest safety standards and regulatory compliance. GMAP members ensure their edible and pharmaceutical gelatins meet national and international safety benchmarks, including independent 3rd party Food Safety Systems certifications.

Groundbreaking Research in Collagen and Gelatin

At the recent GMAP conference in Bangkok in November 2024, attendees had the privilege of hearing from Professor Yaqin Huang of the Beijing University of Chemical Technology, home to a cutting-edge research laboratory focused on collagen, gelatin, and collagen peptides.

Professor Huang’s  presentation was on “Functional Collagen Peptides: Opportunities and Challenges.”

“The bioactivity of collagen peptides gives us many opportunities to develop new products. Collagen peptides provide us with unlimited innovation potential.” – Professor Yaqin Huang

The presentation covered:

  • Developing testing methods and standards for gelatin and collagen peptides, including identifying peptide markers for species identification.
  • Investigating the bioactivity of collagen peptides and the factors that influence their efficacy, such as species, hydrolysis methods, collagen type, tripeptide type, amino acid composition, and sequence.
  • Exploring the benefits of collagen peptides, including their absorption into the bloodstream, antioxidant activity, and potential anti-cancer properties.

These insights enhance the understanding of gelatin and collagen peptides and pave the way for innovative applications that improve health and wellness.

Gelatin: A Natural and Sustainable Solution

Gelatin has long been recognized as a healthy, safe, and natural ingredient. Its production process exemplifies sustainability by upcycling by-products of other industries. This practice supports a circular economy, creating valuable outputs while reducing waste.

As food waste becomes an increasingly urgent global challenge, gelatin manufacturers occupy a unique position in mitigating this issue. Gelatin’s versatility enables it to extend the shelf life and enhance the quality of foods, contributing to waste reduction. Moreover, collagen peptides derived from gelatin empower consumers to maximize the utility of their food. For instance, they transform ripe, soft fruits into creamy smoothies without adding extra calories.

GMAP – Commitment to Quality and Sustainability

Each GMAP member is dedicated to ensuring the quality and safety of their gelatin products while upholding sustainable practices. By adhering to stringent production standards and regional regulations, GMAP members contribute to both public health and environmental stewardship.

A Collaborative Effort for a Better Future

Through its initiatives and the dedication of its members, GMAP underscores the potential of natural products like gelatin in addressing global challenges such as food waste and sustainability. By bridging the gap between industry innovation and consumer well-being, GMAP fosters a future where natural, safe, and sustainable ingredients play a central role in enhancing lives and protecting the planet.
